Your devices
Adding a device
- Install Iceblock on the new device, and open it.
- On a device already in your network, go to Devices, then Add a device.
- If the new device is on the same Wi-Fi, it’s listed under Nearby: tap it. Otherwise, tap Show an invitation, and scan its QR code with the new device, or open its link there.
- The new device asks whether to join. Check that the fingerprint it shows matches the one on the device that invited it, then approve it there.
An invitation works for a few minutes, and for one device. If you didn’t just start adding a device yourself, don’t use one.
A device that has files of its own can still join another network: it brings its files with it (Join another network, bringing this one…, in the menu on My network, on the Devices tab).
What a device may do
Each device has a trust level:
- Full: reads and changes everything. Your own phone and computers.
- Metadata only: sees file names, but not what’s in them.
- Storage: holds encrypted pieces of files for the others, and can read none of it. Good for a computer you don’t control.
You can lower a device’s trust on My network, on the Devices tab: open its card, and tap the ⋮ in its corner. Changing trust and removing a device ask you to confirm it’s you: on Android with your fingerprint (or face, where your phone treats it as secure) or your screen lock, and on Linux with your password, in your desktop’s prompt. Letting a device in, and bringing another network into yours, ask the same, on both devices for a merge.
When a device is lost or stolen
- Remove it: it stops syncing, and new files are hidden from it.
- Mark compromised if someone else may have it: it’s removed now, and wiped when it next connects, after 3 days unless someone cancels.
- Re-key the network afterwards, from the menu on My network, so that nothing it still holds can be read with keys it had.
